What affects does Diving have on Heartburn and air in your Colon? :11: Or is those considered gas? Since holding air in your lungs while accending can be dangerous, I was wondering about stomach gas or heartburn?

Holding air in your lungs while ascending is dangerous because the air you breathed in at depth was compressed. As you ascend it expands and this expansion might cause the damage.

The gas forming in your gastrointestinal tract is created mostly by bacteria and they simply don't create fast enough that much of it to cause any harm while ascending.

It may also form by you swallowing it, but again, no one can swallow enough of it to create a health risk.

So mostly what happens during the dive is that this gas gets compressed at depth and expands back to its starting volume as you ascend. It can only cause as much problems while diving as it does while on land. And no one ever popped like a popcorn by retaining gas.

I ate at taco bell after an afternoon dive then went on a night dive I swore I was light in the night dive and could have used 2 more pounds of lead. :eyebrow: was it the refried beans???
 
If you have heartburn the pressure can make it worse under water. I usually take a few Tums before I dive just to be safe. No problems then. If you have it bad all the time check to see if you have a ulcer. Most are caused by a virus of the stomach lining and are treatable. (I had one for years without knowing)
 
I am an advocate of releasing this potentially dangerous gas as soon as possible, preferrably with the windows up in a car full of your dive buddies. Just tell them you had to equalize.
 
I have acid reflux, and this caused a problem when I first started diving. I'd be fine on the dive, then start to get nausious on the ascent. I pop a zantac first thing in the morning when I dive, and have no problems now.
