On out.last.trip we did a night dive on Bari reef. We got a wild hair and headEd out at about 1030pm. We were so excited. But we saw very little life. One free swimming moray. Lots of sleeping parrot fish. Got to feed the tarpon with our lights (shock as they circled us at first). But not much seemed awake. Did we go out to late? We dove slow and looked for small stuff but really were under impressed? What did we do wrong? Back in a week and want to do another night dive but don't want a repeat of our last. Bill

Can't say if you are too late but have not done a night dive that late. Most of my night dives in Bon are right after sunset or my favorite time is just before sunrise in the morning. Always plenty of life and interesting watching the reef wake up and the light going from dark to dawn.

Night dives are when crustaceans, lobster, crabs and shrimp, come out to play. It is a good time to see octopus. Nocturnal fish will be active like toadfish and morays. However, since you only see what your light reveals, you are pretty limited to what you can cover compared to a day dive. During the day, you can see far more area and as a result are more likely to see things. In my experience, night dives tend to be busts or great. They are memorable because when you see things, it is often critters doing things you would never see during the day.
