I'm wondering if anyone has gone to Rurutu recently. I think it's 150 km away from Tahiti, but it part of Tahiti. I'm just wondering if it is worth the effort to get to Rurutu to see the humpback whales in August.

I think the whales are long gone in August, if there are any in that area. I live in Hawaii and the whales arrive in December and leave cold water in April. I would assume that it is the same story in Tahiti.

August is the correct time yes, Tahiti is south of the equator so the seasons are switched. It is the southern population that visits Polynesia, the northern population visits Hawaii.

I think you are better off going to Tonga in Aug/Sept for the whales. It is much cheaper and you can add in some good diving too.
