I'm curious Tigerman, what is the advantage of whale meat? Is it cheaper then beef-tastier? I suspect that in Japan it might be cheaper then good beef-after all, they have very little land from which to run a ranch. I also think that if tomorrow someone showed me proof that cows were as smart as humans, had very human like family bonds and showed emotion I would still have a hard time switching to goat. Because of this, I do sympathize or at least acknowledge that whaling is a bit of a complicated issue.
life has consiquences and its big boy rules out there my openion means nothing but when someone is killed or injured doing this just dont call it an accident. its not its just the consiquence of your actions. and please except no help and dont put rescuers in harms way for your stunts

Here in Norway its a hell of a lot more expensive than beef. In the 50, 60 and 70s it was real cheap though.
Personally I dont eat it, mainly because the price is insane and the availability is crap. According to my dad who grew up on the stuff (while it was cheap) its quite tasty, but I wouldnt know myself.
Different whales taste different from what I understand. The same fish tastes different in different parts of the world to my taste buds.
There was a NPR story about the Makaha Indian's Grey Whale Harvest back in the late '90"s. Seems the tribe had moved away from being led by the Chief; instead his grandson had been elected as leader. This 40-ish business man probably took foreign bribes under the table and pushed the whaling agenda as a way to boost tourism numbers. The money ruled.
Grey whales were the only whales not on a protected list so they applied for and were granted a permit to collect based on cultural significance. Sea Shepherds put their inflatable between the harpooners and the whales, but eventually they killed a grey whale. There was a scuffle at the boat ramp and front page news was made by the bloodied face of one of the Shepherds who was tackled by the Makaha's hired security.
Later after they were butchering the whale on the beach and the young tribal leaders were attempting to eat fresh cut whale sashimi everyone was throwing up and getting sick. Eventually the young leader asked the Chief what was up with whale hunting. The Chief told the young men "we never hunted the grey. It's name in our language translates to tastes like s-h-i-t."
The grandson then asked why the Chief never told them that? "You never asked" was his reply.

I've eaten whale before. The flesh is somewhat similar to a very good cut of beef, but has a coppery/livery taste to it. I liked it best served as sashimi.
Regarding the morality of whaling, if the harvest is done in a sustainable manner I don't have much of a problem with it. I don't doubt for a moment that whales are somewhat intelligent animals, but then again so are pigs and we kill them by the millions after raising them in truly horrendous conditions. Then there is the issue of the quantity of meat a whale yields. If I remember right, one minke whale yields the equivalent meat of 15 cows. So what's worse, killing 15 cows or 1 whale?

I dont think the Japanese whale hunt in Aussie waters. I think it happens in International waters closer to Antartica. And there is no International Law against Whaling. The IWC is not a law maker. It has a moratorium in place to stop Whaling but allows countries to do it for exempted purpose, and Japan hides what they do behind one of those exemptions.
There would be better luck in making a change, if pressure from other countries was put on Japan to stop them. Sea Shepard is doing what it does to get awareness out there, even if the tactics are extreme and somewhat foolish and even terroristic in nature. They are getting eyes to open to the issue that otherwise would not be open.
I wish the Sea Shepard and its people well. Good luck to them in their struggle. They are going to need it.
