Hi there!

I am staying in Albany south of Perth from 3/5-07 and have a month to explore the west cost. I’ we heard that the Nigoloo Reef up in Exmonth should be an excellent place to see Whale Sharks any recommendations on time and place etc.?

Regards,
JG :crafty:

Albany is a long ways from the Ningaloo Reef and you will need to route through Perth if you choose to fly. There is only one carrier - Skywest www.skywest.com.au - and you can book online very easily. There are shuttles from the airport to both Coral Bay (must be booked in advance; about $75/person) and to Exmouth (just book when you get to the airport - about $20 cash per person). If you will want a car, arrange this before you arrive! Avis, Budget, Europcar and Thrifty all have agencies in Exmouth.

The whale sharks are expected to begin showing up in steady numbers in the very last days of March or early April. If you have flexibility, I would visit in April as late as possible. Note that April is school holidays and is crazy busy - the accommodation choices are very limited in Coral Bay for that time already; Exmouth has more options.

All interaction with the whale sharks is done on snorkel. If you are a current, certified diver you can do a single scuba dive on the Ningaloo Reef from Exmouth only during the tour. Exmouth and Coral Bay are two different places and about 150kms apart.
Happy to help with any other questions!

Hi Alcina!

How is the season for Whale Sharks in May and June?

Regards
Jarle

My personal favourite months. I always suggest to my own family/friends that they come near the end of May or anytime in June. In that time frame we expect to have good whale sharks, fewer people, nice weather (though we can get some days with a bit of chill, so a layer is always recommended), humpback whales and manta rays.

From the beginning of June you need to plan on Exmouth for Whale Sharks but before that either Coral Bay or Exmouth should be fine. Manta Rays are in Coral Bay all year round but don't show up steadily from Exmouth until late May usually.

How many days do i need to see the Whale Sharks, Manta Rays, Humpback whales and the Navy Pier?

I'd plan a minimum of four days in the area.

The Pier is currently and indefinitely closed to divers. When we have information on when it will reopen, we will post it on our web site www.exmouthdiving.com.au

If you would like me to help arrange your holiday, please email me or PM me and I'll be happy to help!
