Just wanted to let you guys know that have been seeing whalesharks pretty much daily this week. Anyone who has access to Utila should get down here asap. I guess as long as the weather holds we will keep seeing them. Now the question is, Utila is often mentioned as being the best place in the world to see these big fish. What does everyone else think and where has everyone else seen them?

Whale sharks congregate at the Flower Gardens Banks, along with mantas, large sharks, and other big pelagics.

Where's Utila & is this seasonal for them to gather here

Utila is a little south and west of Roatan, off the coast of Honduras, Central America.

And the sharks are there almost year round (so to seems) but some times a year there seem to be more of them (i.e., now).

Utila is the smallest of the Bay Islands and one of the cheapest places in the world to dive with wonderful diving (we have dived there many times). We have just returned from a trip specifically to see Whalesharks. We dived with Deep Blue Divers who have a great record for finding them and we jumped in with them every day of our trip it was awesome. This is the main season for them in Utila between end of February and April/May. :cheeky:

I think this is true but they do seem to be around Utila all year. The problem is that to see them you need to be offshore, I have only heard of one siting on a dive and that was at Turtle Harbour on the North side of the island where the drop off is deep (300+). Anyway, going offshore is not always easy because it can get choppy and seeing them becomes difficult. Another good time of the year is Sept/Oct. as long as the weather is calm (ie no tropical activity).

Whale sharks MAY be seen around Utila year-round but don't count on it. I was there in late June last year and no divers on the island had seen one in more than seven weeks according to the DM's. They told us that the whale shark sightings are pretty seasonal and Feb to Apr is defitiely the best time to see them. Several DM's at several shops all said the same thing. The internet adverts for the resorts are true but fairly misleading in this regard.

Diver567,

Who are you diving with down there?

Also, February, March, April & May is the BEST time to see whale sharks at Utila, Bay Islands, Honduras. The rest is chance.

Whale Shark Divers,

Hello all! You can help whale shark conservation and contribute to our understanding of these amazing animals by submitting your photos and log book data to the ECOCEAN Whale Shark Visual Library at:

http://photoid.whaleshark.org

The library has built-in e-mail, searching, matching, and image copyright protection technologies.

E-mail: Automated e-mail functionality informs you if: 1) this is a previosuly unphotographed encounter in our Library, 2) this is a previously photographed and logged animal and provides a link to all other encounters, or 3) if this submission is sighted again in the future.

Searching: The Library allows researchers to search by size, depths, date, sex, location, etc.

Matching: Unique pattern-matching functionality allows us to identify individual animals based on their left-side spot patterns (top to bottom and fifth gill to mid-dorsal fin is the matchable area). This is a new technology that we are seeing great results with. It also offers an interesting alternative to traditional invasive tagging.

Image protection: Unique image protection ensures that only researchers with secure access can view your full size submitted images (which will only be used for research purposes). Casual viewers to the site can only see smaller, low-quality images with copyright text across the image.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions. Your submissions are important, and I encourage to check out the Library and to help us log and protect whale sharks on a global scale.

Cheers,
Jason Holmberg

We were in Roatan the 1st week of Feb. and the whale sharks were there at that time. I guess that was chance.
