A good semi-dry can make a big difference over a standard 2-piece wetsuit if you're not ready to make the jump to dry suit; I just dove my ScubaPro Nova Scotia 6.5mm semi-dry last weekend in 47F/8.3C water (Puget Sound) and was much warmer than I was in the rental 2-piece 7mm suit during my OW cert dives. The seals work really well and kept a lot of water out of the suit.
I will ultimately move to a drysuit if I keep diving regularly, but for the time being a semi-dry works well and I can focus on other aspects of diving (buoyancy, air consumption, navigation, etc) before having to work with an extra buoyancy factor.
