When I got my o/w certification from Pro-Dive out of Cairns last December, we went on a short trip via the MV Kalinda to several spots on the reef. We were using 3-mil short sleeve, long legged one pieces and I was very comfortable, as were the other divers. I'd hve to look back in my log, but I remember the water temp being in the mid to upper 70's.

Remember the GBR is in tropical waters, so whatever works for you in the Carribean will do fine.

But on the flipside, the warmer you are without being too hot will help reduce air consumption. So having one of the hoods or at least a beanie will help reduce heat loss out the top of your head.
