Well, I have been Cayman to dive since my OWC in 2005 and I went with the dive op that our local Dive Shop had recommended - Divetech. Had some wonderful dives with them. I appreciated how they did everything from the beginner diver to the tech stuff, and I liked how they encouraged us to think about what we were doing rather than doing it all for us - I feel like I became a better diver because of that.

Thank you for that quote. You hit the nail right on the head, our mission is to a) ensure our guests have a great (dive) vacation b) help them become the best diver they can be.

At some point we all have been beginner divers, rusty divers, or experienced divers facing a situation they haven’t been in before. The easiest and quickest way for both the diver and staff would be to do it for you. For example it’s way quicker for us to rig up a BCD and reg ourselves, than helping and teaching a diver that might be struggling here. But the diver would not become a more competent diver from this. So we prefer to take a bit more time and effort to help/teach a diver, make them think and question things, and become a better diver.

I use three different dive Ops I have a relationship with all three they all allow me to do my own thing I can also "borrow" tanks from them for shore dives if I am shore diving at a site with no dive op.I can honestly say that I have probably dove with over half the Ops on Island at one time or another and have my preferences.I agree that those that rave about one Op and having never dove with others does get tiring

I have no problem with folks raving about a dive op - as long as the implication is not that that dive op is the best or only good op on the island. I've gone with several and have never had a bad experience, but I imagine that I would have just as good an experience with the others I have not gone with.

Choosing which of the few I go with regularly usually depends on their dive schedule. E.g., I am usually busy weekday mornings so have one op I like that does 2-tank pm dives, while many others do only 1-tank in the PM. Or or if I'm looking to do a weekend AM dive, maybe one of the ops does not have a spot open that day. I also coordinate with friends who may have booked with a particular dive op, and I'll plan to use that op so we can dive together. And I've become friends with several DMs and owners over time and just like to dive with them for that reason. I am happy to give a great review about the ops I use, but it does not mean the others are any less good.

Mike I agree with everything you said what I was referring to was when a new potential visitor to Cayman asks for info on dive ops and a person who has only used one Op on their only trip to Cayman tries to sway them to use that op with no knowledge of any of the others.

Like you I have my preferences for specific reasons all Ops on Island are good otherwise they would not be in business with all the competition some are just "gooder" than others in my opinion.

One of the things that seems to recur on this and other threads is the number of posters who list diving with 3, 4 or even more ops on Cayman that they dive with. This suggests to me that they might not have been happy with the original company and are shopping around, or they booked late when boats were full. My own philosophy is that once I find a good operator, I stick to them exclusively...

That's true for a lot of places but it hasn't worked that way for Grand Cayman - at least not for us. In many destinations, we book a combined package for lodgings and diving and exclusively use the dive op associated with the resort. On Grand Cayman we stay in an apartment or condo, enjoy a lot of topside activities, and we select our dive ops on an al a carte basis. It's usually not intentional but it often works out that way, for us anyway.

During the first week of a Cayman dive vacation we tend to do snorkeling and shore diving on Grand Cayman. Depending on the weather we may add in a few boat dives. Since we usually travel during the slower seasons we haven't encountered any problem with finding space with many dive ops.

Most of the GC shore dive sites have an onsite dive op - so of course we use that shop. If we decide to dive the East End in the afternoon then we would naturally reach out to Ocean Frontiers because they are the only option, and they are good. For a morning dive on the East End either OF or Red Sail Tortuga dive operations would be fine with us.

If we want to do a "Special Dive" then we have to look for a shop that is offering a (Night, Kittiwake, Stingray City, etc.) trip on the day that we want to dive - because most dive shops only offer these special excursions a couple of times per week.

Sometimes we just want to check out a new dive op. Last year on GC we wanted to see the Cobalt Coast resort and dive with them - because we like the other Clearly Cayman resorts and the Reef Divers ops and we were interested in their new property on GC. They were great!

We do like some of the smaller dive ops like Cayman University Divers but small ops may book up quickly so occasionally we may have to look for someone else.

If we wanted to do a lot of diving on GC, we would book a package with one dive op - possibly a place that also offers shore diving - both for convenience and to get the best price and the most dives.

When we head over to Cayman Brac or Little Cayman for the second week of our vacation, we are mostly interested in boat diving, so staying at a diver-dedicated resort with an onsite dive op - and diving only with that op - is both convenient and economical.

I guess it sounds a little goofy but it works well for us!

We have divers that having been coming out with the op for decades. Sometimes they book with others because they want to go East or have friends they have made that go with other ops and want to be buddies. Often those "buddies" will dive with us during the 3 or 4 weeks that they pals are around. Generally we know are repeats schedules and will let them know if we will be booked up so they will not be left out as a courtesy. If we are full, we will find a place we know and love to put our guests. I often dive with different ops (not just ours) because it is a chance to hang out with friends doing something we love to do. It is actually a tight knit community and everyone knows each other. Many DMs have worked at several different ops on the islands so it is sometimes a bit comical when someone who have been diving here a few times goes on and on about how knowledgeable, helpful, professional the only op they ever tried is. Great for business but not a standard any of us pat ourselves on the back about.
