Nice boat. How long was the ride? and how was the dive?

Out of stonington it was 27 miles.
We dashed out in 1.5 hours

We arrived at my questionable set of numbers to find that it was not the correct location. My sonar picked up nothing. After an hour of sweeping the wind kicked in pretty strong so we headed back
it was still fun as it gave me several hours to pick on my brother.
i am willing to take anyone and their buddy there for free that can give me the correct location

Those numbers for the U-853 are quite published and popular I thought. There should also be moorings on the wreck so you don't need your sonar. There were 3 last time I went.

Were did you get you numbers from ?

i got them on line
there are several of them all different
I added up all of them and thought I had the correct location.
There was not 3 balls there
Here is where I went
41 13 295 ish
071 24 868 ish
I was sure if I got close we would see the balls.

every white cap looked like a ball

White caps could make a big diff as the balls could have been pulled under.

I suggest going to the dive shop and getting one of the NE wreck diving books. Those numbers are used by some I believe and a are good.

USM....
the numbers you used got you about 0.4 mi SE of the 853. The numbers I use are:
41-13.295
71-24.868
Those will get you within spotting distance of the buoys. There were three of them last time I went there last Saturday....middle one is the conning tower.

Sarus...You're right, NE wreck diving books are a good bet for finding good numbers, dive conditions, and historical info. Gary Gentile's series are very helpful. The numbers he gives are pretty much dead nuts on.

Check out: Gary Gentile's "Shipwrecks of Rhode Island and Connecticut", 2004, ISBN 1-883056-14-4. You can order it from his website: Gary Gentile Productions, or maybe pick it up at your LDS.

Good Luck and have safe dives, USM!...see ya out there sometime!

The next time , try:
41-13.594 71-25.126
These will put you right over the wreck.

But these will allow you to drop a private anchor right on the conning tower 5 out of 5 times ........ lol j/k :D

Hey thanks Earl. We know the value of a good NE diving book. Also recommend getting the two Adventure Diving RI books also. A must have and covers the popular ship wrecks.
