I have a weight belt and put some weighs into BCD. The weight on the belt I have is just enough to make my dry suit more or less neutrally buoyant so if I take the BC off I feel comfortable in the water. The rest balances the BCD more or less, say I have 3 lb more in the left pocket to counterbalance the bottle on the right side. The best thing to do is to go into the water and balance. I saw a big difference when I have found a good balance. Now I can float in water w/o fining or doing any movements and stay in the same position. This also can be done with the air bubble if you dive dry suit but I think it's not a good practice as it' more difficult to control and I tend to have the suit inflated just enough to eliminate the squeeze.

Okay,

I currently have two three pound weights on each side and they feel pretty good. With the CAN light comming in at -3 negative three pounds, I can change to 8 lbs of lead weight instead of 12 lbs. So you can see why I wanted to get an idea what the preference is for weight belts.

Thanks,

not really :) if it's a question about putting two 3 pounders next to each other instead of one 6 pounder it does not matter IMO but if it's a question if you want to put them in different places to have proper balance than as I wrote above it helped me.

Bob,

I guess what I'm trying to find out, do divers prefer two large blocks of lead on their hips or breaking down the lead into two smaller pieces of lead.

Four pieces of lead equally balanced on each hip or just one block on each side?

In this case: a pair of two pound weights on each hip or one single 4 lb block on each hip?

Thanks,

MG

Sorry, my sig is confusing, I guess. I'm Tom. About the only thing that bugs me with a weight belt is if I get a weight sandwiched between my BP and me. Other than that, I can't really tell the difference.

If using a weight belt, as other friends mentioned, important is that the belt does not interfere with your equipment and you are confortable with, balance can be achieved with either configuration.

My choice nevertheless, is no weight belt, I prefer all the ballast on my back, so for doubles I really just need BP and cylinders (I use double Worthington HP120s) and with singles I divide the weight between the singles adapter and two pockets, one on each rig that hold the bottle, so I can adjust the trim properly and don't need weight belt.
