I had the great pleasure of diving with a pregnant male weedy seadragon today in Botany Bay, near Sydney. What an unique animal!

The males of this species have the fertilized eggs stuck to their bodies.

What a cool find! Sea dragons are way up on my husband's list of things he would really love to see . . .

Yes, they are in the seahorse & pipefish family. Just like pipefishes, the males stick the fertilized eggs to their bodies. What makes them unusual for a seahorse is their large size - the male I observed was about 30 cm long. They are only found in the temperate and cold waters of Australia - for some reason Australia seems to be a great place for all kinds of seahorses, I see many "conventional" seahorses here as well.
