I was wondering what type of material the different BP/W Manufacturer's use for their harnesses. Is there just one type? Any one better than the others?

It's all polypropylene/epoxy weight belt webbing and it's all pretty similar. Some is a little softer than others, some is a little wider than others. My 2" webbing from Reef Scuba is about 1/8" narrower than the 2" webbing that came with my Halcyon rig, which makes it easier to thread through buckles and suck. Halcyon's new H webbing is a little narrower and softer as well.

Curiosity killed the cat, but I'm thinking about trying something today.

Stop me if I'm being stupid.

I bought some new webbing for my SS plate. I'm thinking about soaking it all day and then throwing it in the dryer with fabric softener to soften it up a bit.

Does anyone think it will work? I don't know if the material will react with the softener.

Hey, Big Jon, why are you sucking on your webbing after you pull it through the buckles????? :D

I doubt it.. fabric softener is basically wax. Maybe if you toss some bricks in the dryer with it.....

Why do you want it softer, anyway? I like it stiff.. it already rolls a bit when donning or doffing, if it were softer it would roll even more.

LOL... I don't even know what word I meant to put there!

:06:

I just pulled the new webbing out of the bag. It seems a lot softer than the webbing on my AL plate. The webbing on my AL plate is very stiff, almost to the point of being uncomfortable. (even through the drysuit) I bought this new webbing at FillExpress. Maybe I'll have to go pick up some more and replace the 'brittle' stuff.

To soften it up maybe? The saliva breaks down the material making it pliable? lol!

Thanks for the info jonnythan. I don't want to start a "which harness is better" discussion here, but I am looking at the zeagle std. harness in particular (gonna use my ranger wing) and cannot find a shop in SoCal with one in stock to look at. My buddy has a Halcyon rig and the harness looked pretty heavy duty. I was just wondering if Zeagle uses a similar material for their webbing.

I wouldn't choose based on webbing material... get whichever harness/backplate is cheapest and fits your weight/slot placement requirements..

I beg to differ on the material. I've had 4 sets of webbing on 2 different backplates. The comfort, antichaffing ability, and pliability make a big difference in the overall setup. After really looking at this webbing from FillExpress, I can't see why I ever put up with the stiff stuff on my AL BP. The darn thing will nearly stand up on it's own. :)
