Wear your good wetsuit in the pool?

Just picked up my first wetsuit as I start to purchase my own gear.

This brought a question to mind: Since I only have one and this one has a little color in it, will wearing it in a pool give me any problems, fade the colors, etc.

I remember the rental wetsuits we used during dive training were pretty ugly and faded. So I am curious if seasoned divers have a good suit for ocean diving and and older junker for pool work?

What other tips should I know for care of wetsuit?

Well unless you are an instructor I don't think you'll be spending much time in the pool. Wearing it during OW training will be fine if you rinse it. I haven't been in a pool (except when I play in my own) since OW so I never thought about it again. If I use it in my pool (once a year maybe) I just rinse the suit and its fine.

Suits get ugly and faded from chlorine and salt and sun. No matter what you do to it eventually it'll fade under use.

The main problem with the pool is Chlorines ability to rot the material and you end up with holes in it.

Your SucbaBoard profile does not tell us too much. You might want to at least indicate which portion of the country you are located in (i.e. New Eggland, Florida etc.)

If you are in New England or the nothern United States the wet suit you use in the pool will be significantly different in thickness & buoyancy characteristics from the one you will use for your open water check out dives. If that is the case simply use the wet suit provided by the instructor for the pool sessions and use your new wet suit for the open water checkout dives.

I am assuming that the instructor is providing the necessary wet suits for the pool sessions as part of the course fee.

I say keep whatever equipment you can out of the pool if possible. Chlorine is worse than seawater when it comes to rotting things out. But also can be remidied with a meticulous rinse of fresh water.

I use mine in the pool. It's eventually gonna fade, so why not? I have not seen any problems with rot caused by chlorine, and I am not particularly fastidious about rinsing it after using it in the pool.

Sorry, it's probably just my warped sense of humour but this has to be the funniest post I've seen in a long while.

Just use it , man. Rinse when you're through.

They will make new wet suits and nobody else really cares how vibrant the colors on your wetsuit are (not trying to be ugly, but it's true.)

Let me update my post. I am well past my OW. I completed Rescue course last year. I figure to take another class this summer.

I have a 3 mil suit, for warm water diving, and I live in the mid-atlantic region.

The reason this question came up: During one of my classes I dove in a t-shirt and bathing suit in the local pool. I had a weight belt around the lower portion of the t-shirt. After one 2-3 hour pool session, the shirt faded EXCEPT where it was covered by the weightbelt.

While this is not a fashion question, the suits are expensive. I was curious if anyone might not have worn a suit in the pool if they known it would fade?

I can appreciate what you are saying. When I took open water training I was wearing a black bathing suit. By the time I finished the course the bathing suit was now brown except where it was covered by the BC.

The pool we were using was also used for the elderly, physical rehabilitation and for teaching young kids and babies to swim (YMCA). As a result the temperature was higher than normal and the Ph and chlorine levels were extremely high.

If the pool is warm enough and you can get away with the swim suit I would stick with the already discolored swim suit and shirt.
