Wouldn't WD40 cause the plastic/rubber pieces of the regs - diaphram, o-rings, lp seat (if it got in there) and what else have you to deteriorate faster?
I think somebody needs to lose their job.

I have used WD -40 externally on my regulators and tank valves for
30+ years. My newest regulator is 25 years old and looks almost new. I have tank valves that are 50 years old and look almost new.

WD-40 is used by cold water divers on 1st stages with no enviro seal. I've been told that the WD-40 prevents ice on the exposed spring.

WD 40 should never be used on a regulator. Food grade Silicon spray is the only thing that should be used. If you want to wipe the outside of the 1st stage with WD 40, that may be ok.

WD40 (Water Displacement Formula #40) I think most of you are over reacting. You should not spray it into your mouth but spraying it into a regulator and rinsing it out before use is not a big deal. Many divers have used it for years to keep their gear clean and lightly lubricated. Before stomping of in a huff, why would you not just talk to the instructor first? After all, do you think he just giggled and thought, “Hmm, maybe I’ll just poison my students today.”! Do you really think this was his first time trying it?

If such a chemical is ingested, this occurrence is a violation of multiple laws. That is compounded by the fact that it was done during a commercial activity, dive instruction. To endanger the health and lives of others due to the operation of a business activity is a big offense. Using chemicals in a way that they are not designed to be used in a workplace is another. When the instructor accepts money to provide a service (instruction) the pool is his place of work. This has got to be well outside of the "hazards of diving" release forms that we often are presented.

Even if it is a "no harm done", it is still "possible harm".

I don't see it as over reacting at all. So, you would be cool if I sprayed your reg with WD-40? Remember you breathe out of this thing, which now will contain harmful chemicals. Secondly, I don't think that guy was trying to purposely posion his students, I think was an honest ignorant mistake. Also, just because you do something stupid repeated times doesn't always mean the outcome is going to be the same. :shakehead
