Laying on/kicking the reef, touching wildlife, diving way outside of their limits, putting others in danger, completely disregarding depth/air levels, abandoning buddies etc etc. It literally gets me feeling physically anxious. I like to think this is the minority of divers out there but the fact that these folks are OW and in some cases AOW and above is very worrisome. I certainly do not expect perfection but it seems to me that some folks very easily get certified without ever really understanding the magnitude and potential ramifications of this sport. In my opinion, one who is interested in diving should also have a passion for being safe and skilled. I've been forced to "taddle" on divers previously after multiple times of letting them know they are banging up the reef.

I'm sure this very same sentiment has been shared time and time again so apologies for a not so original post, just had to "off gas" for a moment ;)

Heck I couldn't even watch videos after my certification because some titles were so scary, the first thing when you type in scuba is "scuba gone wrong".

I won't even go to Haunama Bay any more because I had to yell at so many people standing on the reef taking selfies. When I complained to the staff they said they were not allowed to say anything other than a general "please stay off the reef". they were not allowed to address specific idiots. But they thanked me for helping. Argggg. You got me all worked up scubadoo83!

lol I'm good at that
When i watchyoutube videos i usually watch tec divers and im jalous of their trim, buoyancy control and finning techniques :)
No doubt there are plenty of great videos out there to learn from, however I must be a glutton for punishment watching those that raise my blood pressure.

It all depends on the intend of the divers and video producer.

I watched a pretty cool video at Flores last night from some dude w 1k utube followers. The guide broke an edge of a table corals trying to get a fleeing fish out for the shot. I literally screamed on the seat. But im definitely might have been just as guilty as i set on to capture that memorable dive.

Also i think OP s gripe mentioned about some negative parts of scuba. I have long term friends that becomes "same ocean diver" no matter how i try. So i just gave up.

Going in w a new crew, that definitely holds more true. The buddy concept really dont hold up unless u are both sticklers. Its really solo crowd diving. Better be sure to take care of no 1 to before assisting others. Master ones skills and be mindful of others & environment.

It is a general problem affecting the whole dive industry. I was diving this past weekend and an instructor was about 30' away with a student. The instructor kept clapping loudly and told the student that "in 40 kick cycles you will be advanced". I am taking it to mean the student diver had to do one more dive to finalize the requirements for Advanced Open Water. Well the student takes her gear down to the entry area and the instructor follows suit. The instructor and the student get into the water and suit up in water. The instructor is having to move the students inflator hose from around the students back and puts it on her left shoulder and attaches it with the Velcro attachment piece. Then the instructor turns the students air on and checks the pressure gauge for the student. The whole time I am like "THIS IS AN ADVANCED DIVER?"

My first trip to Cozumel, this past week, had me on a boat one day with a pair that were more concerned with their gopros than anything else. Kicking the crap out of corals and other bottom dwelling animals, they also gave a new meaning to bicycle kick, they actually looked like they were sitting on a bike kicking.

I normally leave others be due to my relative newness to scuba, but I couldn't this time. I got their attention and gave my meanest look (through a mask, kinda losses efficacy) and pointed to their destruction and told them to rise up.

To pay me back, since the ocean is so small, they decided to swim directly next to me, or right above me, or swimming down in front of me all the time goproing. I couldn't tell what they were video tapping but am sure they got some great footage of my big a$$!!!
