On Thursday the waves at Marineland were overhead and the water was a muddy mess. Boulders the size of small cars were moved from the week before and the outlook for diving this week was bleak. Thirty six hours later the ocean was calm and visibility was close to twenty feet.
Merry and I planned to shoot stills and video of a Mantis shrimp we found last week. We headed to the area we thought it might be and dropped. Before we reached the bottom Merry was already pointing at our first photo op, a large flatworm, Pseudoceros luteus. We then headed in the general direction of the Mantis shrimp and I was lucky to spot his den nearby. We didn't get any great shots, but at least we found it. Not bad for swimming 1/4 mile on the surface to find a six inch animal out in the sand.
After feeding Abby we headed back in for a nervous exit. The surf zone, which was gravel and sand for the past few months was now filled with basketball sized rocks. We made it out without getting killed. The ocean was flat, visibility was 15-20 feet and water temperature was 54F.

Great shots as usual! Love that profile shot of the tube worm. Good to hear that vis has cleared up... Hopes for a good Tuesday dive @ marineland looks much better now.:D

We found a spot today just below and to the right of your Maxcart today to exit and it was just small stones. We were able to take our fins off about 10' out and stroll out without a hitch. It was the first time I have got that lucky but maybe a rock that was there dislodged and took a hike?
The vis was great, we really got lucky today.

Evil Jeff Shaw and I will be there at 2:15 tomorrow. It looks even better than Sunday.

Man you guys had a waaaaay different experience than we did. Saturday we dove Deadman's in Laguna and Sunday out at Catalina, both days best viz we saw was 15'

My buddy traveled all the way from Toronto for the "great viz of Catalina" bad timing...he's back on a plane this morning...which means viz is probably somewhere in the 25' range now.:dork2:

dive safe,

(the good) Jeff Shaw.

Thanks for the shots! I LOVE the Mantis shrimp. They are one of my faves.

I was really hoping on getting there today, but unfortunately my dive buddy has got a winter bug and can't dive. Were both hoping he recovers by Thursday so we can head down to Shaw's. The next Marineland dive will probably be Saturday for us, maybe I'll see you there. ;)
