I came to realize today that there really isn't anything on the web that even comes close to this website when it comes to scuba. Sure, there's places to go to buy and what-not... but no other quality online communities. Truth is, it seems as though scuba is getting a rather slow jump on the internet. What was life like before ScubaBoard?

You've got to be kidding, Rodale's D2D was and still is there.

I admit sometimes things are a bit the man-eat-man side, but I still consider them to be good.:D

Hi chiara,

Indeed. D2D has been around for 5 years, and logs as many as 4,500 hits per day.

In addition, there are several others, including one hosted by AOL.

Thank you.

Usenet's been around for ages. I think the first rec.scuba posts were in the late eighties. I was using e-mail and Usenet then, guess that really dates me!

BBS systems like this are much, much better, IMO.

Just to give you a little bit of trivia, the SSN has been around for about 7 years now and is made up of over 300 domains online. These forums as they stands now, are just over a year old and have grown to a bit over 5,000 hits every [red]hour[/red] of the day ...

It's really encouraging to see that people are comfortable here and that the diving community is growing stronger. It is all because of all of you that this place is as special as it is.

What was life like before ScubaBoard?

Great! GEnie (an information service no longer in existence) offered a Scuba Roundtable and Compuserve offered a Scuba Forum. Both were ASCII oriented and, even at 2400 bps, one could read and write more per hour spent in front of one's computer than one can these days with DSL talking to the Web views of Scubaboard, the current Compuserve forums, AOL, Prodigy, etc. No agonizingly long waits for a screen to appear! Readers were available for both GEnie and Compuserve which allowed one to easily organize sessions and minimize on-line time (We used to be allotted only a few hours of connect time per month for our $5.95).

The GEnie Scuba Roundtable was, IMHO, easily the best - visited daily my a lot of very knowledgable people discussing issues in a civilized fashion.

For sure there was life before scubaboard ;) but...

....it was no the same !!!!!

This board is more than a scuba board...It is a strong community that really made me a better diver....Better for me and my buddies or fellow divers...

Keep up the good work mods...
