OOPS I KILLED WARRANTY SPELLING

I have a question for the board...

I purchased a BC less then 10 months ago and while diving it on my 15 or so dive.. the filler/inflator neck on the bladder broke right off while on a 85 ft dive..
(bc wasnt on recall list but in same date)

I then visted the place where i purchased it and they informed me to send it back to mfg.

Well i was a bit terbed cause of their request but said ok...

I contacted sherwood and informed them of the model etc and recieved a email stating that the model i had recently purchased had been discontinued years ago..

Funny i wasnt told this at time of purchase from my LDS..

Well after talking to sherwood rep a few times i was told that the model i have is discontinued and there are no parts for my BC to fix..

BUT for 200 dollars i would be able to purchase a New model BC...

My problem is ...should i be forced to buy a better model due to them selling a old model and not being able to repair it...?

Im not being ungrateful but i dont think its right i be forced to upgrade...?

You thoughts are much appreciated

I'm over in St. Pete. Where did you get it? I would take it back to them and explain the situation. If it is under the originally stated warranty period, they should repair or replace it. It's not your fault that they 1 - sold you old stock and 2 - there aren't parts available to fix it. Why the LDS? They are your contact, purchase point, and should be "representing" your case to the manufacturer. If they tell you to deal with the manufacturer again - kindy remind them that you didn't buy it from the manufacturer, you bought it from THEM.

Unless this was a situation where they explicitly told you they were selling you an old model cheap with no warrenty, the shop should make good on this. This is why you usually pay more at an LDS, they can't have it both ways.

I do think the manufacturer/distributor should care that one of their dealers is doing this and assist in make you whole if the shop won't on it's own. Suggesting you buy a new one even cheap when you're still under warrenty (I assume) is a crock. If Sherwood won't help that's the sort of thing that raises a red flag about buying Sherwood.

I'm sure there is some agency that cares about companies honoring warrenties, or maybe the BBB, perhaps a mention of something that will be enough to help things along...

funny thing that happened to someone who walked into the facility I was working at..The customer purchased sherwood bcd at leisure pro and came into the lds for repair, same part broke as described..I explained that there was nothing we could do for free -no warranty-and to take it back to where he purchased it..I took the same model off the wall and disassembled the same ppart and showed him the the one off our authorized bcd had thicker plastic on it than the one purchased from LP..Why the difference ,I do not know..Was the original assembly replaced by dealer with a less expensive one??don't know, this is the same guy who purchased a aqualung micra from LP ,came in for annual and the pin that holds the lever in place was rotted /rusted out..never saw that with one purchased from a lds..Was it a knockoff??

nope I don't think so. I've seen dozens of micras with the pin rusted to heck and the valor (same second) and we were an authorized dealer for both and had sold new some of the units with the problem.

There is only one case of knockoff in the dive industry I know off and that was 7 years ago now.

Nope i didnt purchase a aqua thing....

I got a few promising emails so ill post the results of this little swarray..

By the way i am right back where i ended up after talking to a rep..

The LDS... lets see what happens today...

The rep couldn't sort this out??????

You did buy from a authorized dealer and still have the receipt right?

I can't imagine that not being repairable even if you have to use another brand of elbow. You might have to find a shop with a better than average tech to do the job.

if in warranty and bought at a authorized dealer with receipt he shouldn't have to pay however. That being said the filler that broke is easy to get that fits this unit....

I want to thank everyone for thier replies and insight ...

I just returned from LDS and they had been in contact with sherwood themselves and they gave me a complete new one , exactley the same as the one i had the problem with.

I have purchased a new one since this so i have a brand new one i guess ill use as a spare.

I had reciepts and everything for all my products i purchased, im not sure why there was a problem before and why i was directed to send to the dealer...

Even thought it took a bit longe then i had anticipated in the end it all panned out...

But i still think i should have been told at time of purchase that the model has been off production for 5 years..

Thank you to all who offered insite on this..
