Doc Harry:
It's the lag after you get the photo that bugs me. For an 8-megapixel photo is takes about 10+ seconds to write to the image to the SD card.

Correct me if I'm wrong: but I believe there are SD cards available which offer faster transfer speeds. So some SD cards record the image quicker than others. These are of course, quite expensive.

There are two specifications; 1.01 with a max speed of 66mhz and specification 1.1 with a max speed of 133mhz

That would help alleviate your lag time. 10 seconds is excessive. Especially for wildlife photography.

Bbarnes:
I bought the DC500 and truthfully had some issues on my first trip with it. .

Hi all,

I have just ordered for my husband's birthday the Sealife DC500 and as I only recently joined this board, I didn't really here anything bad about this camera before.
On our trip to Jordan, Red Sea last January we had one of our fellow-divers who had the DC500 and seemed very happy.

On our next trip to Oman or Turkey in June, we will use it for the first time. Any advice? I didn't buy the battery charger seperately, but it has a craddle to put the Camera on and charges the battery that way I think??? I also bought a seperate light probe.

More advice welcome

I use a Pentax Optio S5i. Housing is rated to 40m (120 odd feet) and the shutter lag is virtually non existant for pre focused shots. It's about 3/4 of a second for a non pre-focused shot. Pic quality is good (5MP), the camera is very small (fits in an Altoids box) though I"ll doubt you'll find them brand new anymore. having said that, you could check them out on e-bay.

SubMariner:
Without a strobe you will limited to macro/up close shots because you will not have enough light for anything else.

Bonne chance,

Not entirely true as my latest pics show...
But then I am diving in water with good vis and lots of light...
Manual white balance and using ambient/natural light can produce stunning photos in the right conditions...
Having said that eventually if one is serious about underwater photography then a strobe will become necessary.

No substitute for light!

I would go ahead and buy another battery and charger if you are going to do more than 2 dives a day. Otherwise, you should be fine with one. I heard from one of the guys at Sealife that they are coming out with a longer lasting battery, so you might want to wait until that is available. I don't think that they are actually even announcing it until the end of the month so I don't know how long it will take to get it into the stores.
We are really happy with our DC500. Like any other camera, it has a learning curve s o be patient while finding out what works best under your current dive conditions.
