I'm a Fish!
We are in the process of trying to start club for divers that are based in the Phuket area.

Fed up with going on the "cattle" boats to the popular dive sites, want to spend more than 60 mins with your camera on your favourite coral head? Maybe this will suit you then. The idea is that the "club" would charter a boat for the day, head off to the site that we had agreed on and then we all hit the wtare for some fun. So if you want to do a 2 1/2 dive on the plateau great, do a full tec trip to the vestal at 70m, no problem.

There must be plenty ofpeople on the island who are divers either in the dive industry or not who are looking for something a bit more than the bus trips to the local sites. With 10 people on a cahrter boat the costs would be bewteen 1000 and 1500 baht for a full days diving depending on the disatnce to the site and associted fuel costs. Cheap diving by any standards.

The more people in the "club" the better as it will allow greater choice fro trips with more of them being organised.

Anyone interetsed please email me your details and a contact number to diving_thailand@hotmail.com

Please pardon my ignorance, hope i'm not threadjaking here, but i have few related questions:

1-Does it mean diving boats charge somehwere from 10K to 15K a day trip, excluding
divemaster and equipment use?
2-what costs for a diver AOW certified w/equipment using dive boat?
3-Can a dive master go voluntary to work without being paid, so he get he dives for free?
4-How many pro master are staying long-term in phuket and surroundings at a time? I was told it's 1500 which seems unrealstic?
5-How or what thai divemaster vs farang IDC instrutor paid like monthly?

@ No, it means that you can rent a proper boat for diving in Phuket for 10000 to 15000 Baht a day.

2-what costs for a diver AOW certified w/equipment using dive boat?

@ Depending on your destination and the amount of dives anywhere between 2200 and 3000 Baht.

3-Can a dive master go voluntary to work without being paid, so he get he dives for free?

@ You need a work permit first and a job with a Dive Centre. Professional Dive Centres employ professional dive crew and do not like to do the " work-for-free-dives" scheme.

4-How many pro master are staying long-term in phuket and surroundings at a time? I was told it's 1500 which seems unrealstic?

@ I'm not sure what you mean with "Pro Master" but guess you're talking about the number of dive pro's working in Phuket. I don't know numbers but surely a helluva lot!

5-How or what thai divemaster vs farang IDC instrutor paid like monthly?

@ Both Thai and Farang (Western) dive professionals are paid money and normally at the end of each month if they have a full time job. There shouldn't be much (if any) difference between qualified Thai and qualified Farang dive pro's.

Hope this will help!:D

i hate this idea, some of us actually want to have a career and would like to be paid for the work we do. seeing more and more of the "will work for free food/ diving"

anyway the idea of a PRIVATE CHARTER DIVE boat is that we can choose the sites and type of diving we want to do and you DO NOT have to work in the dive industry to be involved in the club.

Sign me up, sounds like a great idea. Its just what Phuket needs, and it might also give all the inexperienced instructors/divers in Phuket a chance to learn a few things from guys who have been doing it for years. And kindle a passion for diving that I think alot of the dm,s and instructors who have never really dived for themselves are lacking because they have never experienced anything but guiding and teaching.
Keep me posted, I,m in.
Freedom!

Great Idea, will watch this develop, if time permits would love to get some 'personal fun' diving, would also like to stamp down on this 'dive for free' school of thought. Dive Operators that employee casual / free DMs that simply want the experience and dives are putting themselves at massive risk by putting their reputations and company name into the hands of a (probably) uninsured / non-workpermitted / inexperienced / non- working visa'd 'dive student' I too want this industry to continue to be a career for myself and urge Dive operators to think carefully next time someone offers to work for free. If something sounds too good it possibly is, this may work short term but one day it will come back and bite you.

Good luck with the PDC (Phuket Diving Club ?)

could everyone that has pm'd me & replied to thread that they are interested please EMAIL me their contact details (name, email addy & phone number if poss) to

diving_thailand@hotmail.com

so i can get a proper list going. thanks a lot & remember if you have friends that dive or want to dive then pint them in this direction :) the more we get the cheaper it is / bigger boat we hire :)

thanks a lot

There are many differnet scenarios.

1-The dive master might have another source of high income or better business
and considering dive master being paid like 20,000 bhat/month, who wants to work for LDS, meantime he don't still have to pay for doing his diving as a dive master

2-Dive master might be coming from another part of the world, and wants to find out about diving profitability after operating a local dive outlet

getting a bit off the topic of trying to start dive club but I do not agree with the work for free/diving philosophy at all. I wish to earn a decent living from this profession. Perhaps if there were not so many people willing to work for the “diving” the DM’s wage would be 50,000 a month and inst’s a 100? I can understand why people will do it, 2 months off work, unlimited diving etc. in the end though, it is the customers that get short changed. We have all been behind a muppet who thinks that you hit 30m till you are low and then head up to 5 m for the last 20mins, not a professional at all but sadly a high % of DM’s seem to think that is how you do it, then there is the speedy Gonzales brigade……. There are a lot of threads about this on the web perhaps we should contribute to them and try and keep this as a “dive club” one :)
