That's very helpful!

So you think the south ones are slightly more off the beaten path (I know it's a relatively small area, but you know what I mean).

Yes, that's right. And there are trees you walk through, whereas the path from the dive center to the ones to the north of the jetty is more "open" if you understand what I mean. They may have installed more lighting along the pathways, but when I was there, you needed a torch to walk around at night, and that long(ish) walk through those trees sort of weirded me out after I saw a sea krait slithering across the path one evening (I was barefoot).

AFAIR, there were obstacles. Can't quite remember what, though. There is a sort of wall where the jetty meets the island, at least on one the south side, and the beach on that side isn't as wide as the one to the north of the jetty. Don't remember much about the beach around the corner. I just remember a lot of vegetation over in that area. Again, maybe it's changed since then (it's been three years since I went).

Alcina - We just booked for - wait for it - June 2009...we knew we wanted to go, and since we saved a bunch of $ by booking at 2007 rates, we went for it.

We also went for some insurance, just in case. And maybe I'll even understand my camera by then.

Anyways, we did book the sunset view beach villa, just becaue we thought it would be nice to sit wand watch the sun set, beer in hand, from our villa. Not that this helps, but just in case this sways you.

I did see something written somewhere that they now provide a torch in the villas. Let's hope so!

Here is a pic of Wakatobi showing the whole layout.

Hi, I just got back from Wakatobi in September. I stayed in Premium Bungalow #7 (one of the sunset facing ones) and a friend of mine stayed in Beach Bungalow #21 ( I guess that would be a south facing one). If I went back I would probably save my money and book a Beach Bungalow or maybe even a Garden One (you can still see the water from those). The breeze was really nice around those, our Bungalow area was EXTREMELY hot from the sun and dead air! Also, the Premium Beach Bungalows, at least the ones South of the longhouse where I was, are behind a bunch of palm trees and the main path, so you're pretty far back from the water - maybe just as much as the other Garden ones actually.

As for the sunsets, I was pretty much on the jetty bar every night at sunset with my bintangs, so it didn't really matter that we could see it from our room :) It was nice that the room was so close to the restaurant and the gear room and longhouse and everything though, so if you'd prefer to only be a 30 second walk instead of - say - an 8 minute walk, that is an advantage. As for your question about walking back to the far cabins on the beach at night - you really can't because when the tide is in, the water basically comes right up to the seawall.

I hope this helped, feel free to PM me if you want!

I hope you have a great time, I am jealous! I want to go back!
