Hi,
Looking for some insights. I’m heading to Truk next month and want to get a back-up computer. My primary is a Vytec with the transmitter. I’m looking at getting the Oceanic Veo 200 to pop in my BC pocket as a back-up. My question is one of compatibility. I dive the Vytec in the least conservative mode available. I know Oceanic is known for being on the conservative side. Is there too much of a difference between the conservativeness? I plan to only dive within recreational limits, and not push the NDLs, so I don’t expect to be setting off any alarms. Does anyone see a problem with using the VEO as a back-up? Oh, and I’ll be taking an extra SPG and Depth gauge to add on if I loose my Vytec. Thanks

That's a interesting question. If I were to go with a back up computer, I would probably want one with a similar algothrim. The Suunto and the Oceanic use two very different models for nitrogen tissue loading. Take a look at the results that were obtained by John Bantin w/ Diver Net Magazine (British Publication). They did some head to head testing of most of the common dive computers out there. Read his results they were interesting. www.divernet.com, equipment, "pick your algothrim". Do your homework, think, dive safe.

I'll second pennypacker's opinion...

It's my belief that your primary and your backup should be of a similar loading-model. If that's not possible for one reason or another, I would choose a more conservative primary, with a liberal backup (as you have done). However, it is more likely with 2 different algorithms that you will be able to perform dives with the primary that may put the backup in lock-out (I know, suunto is conservative, but it's more likely than if you had 2 of the same algo - right?). If that happens, the backup is useless.

If you haven't purchased the Veo yet, I wouldn't. Get one of Suunto's wrist computers as a backup instead. It will still be out of the way (like the Veo in a pocket), but should provide you with a better backup solution than the Veo.
