Am looking to buy a computer and have narrowed it down (I think, unless you all tell me differently) between a Vyper and Mosquito. I have not dove with either one (only rental Uwatecs), but like what I have seen of them.

My questions are:

Does the Vyper offer a Dive Time readout? I can't find it in the manual that I downloaded (except after the dive is over). Seems odd, now I'll have to wear a watch too. (Or should you always wear both?)

Beyond that, I like the dive planning aspects of the Vyper.

Can any of you users out there point out other key differences I should consider in making my choice?

Thanks!

I have both but I recommend Vyper.

Vyper has dive time shown at display during the dive (of course).

To wear backup time (and depth) measuring device or not depends mostly of type of diving you plan to do. I'm not sure if it's needed for rec diving. Also, you can consider your buddy as your backup.

Mosquito can be used as watch (Vyper can't) but it doesn't look nice to me (especialy comparing to Stinger) and I've never used it as watch.

Vyper has bigger display and it has gauge mode (time & depth only) which Mosquito don't have (it has free diving mode).

Thanks - I found the dive timer. I wonder why Suunto didn't check the box, "Dive Time in Seconds and Minutes" on the Vyper box in their comparison chart?

I like the Vyper too, I think they'll have a new customer today!

(2 years old) only displays elapsed Dive Time in whole minutes...

If there is a secret to getting it to show min/sec, please share.

deco stops. The whole number display leaves a bit of ambiguity as to when you actually arrive at the stop...

can contribute to increased bubble formation and overly long stops can result in ongassing instead of the desired offgassing, so having a more precise timing function can be helpful.

Glad to learn everyday! Otherwise life would be a major drag...
Thanx 4 the info!

The Vyper has more features such as (non-lockout) Gauge mode and Simuation mode, but it's bulky and I didn't like the angled face edges which make it hard to see the numbers at an angle.

The Mosquito is compact and light, but has that silly 5-minute free-dive Gauge mode (I wonder what marketing genius came out with that one!) and some people complain about the small numbers. Its face is easily scratched and I don't like the clumsy opaque protector (I'm thinking of trying a palm-computer clear screen overlay on it instead, but it probably won't stick in water).

So why did I buy the Mosquito? Mainly for the size. I'll probably be getting a more 'techie' computer in a few years, and don't want 2 big computers on me. Plus the Vyper is on back-order and I'm diving in a week :-). More fool me for waiting 'til the last minute... Alea jacta est...

Time to curl up with the manual...
