After much time wasted, I'm ready to return the Suunto cable and adapter to the LDS and say to heck with it unless someone here can show me the solution.

I've used my Vyper for about a year now. No problems at all with the dive computer.

Finally sprung for the overpriced Suunto Cable to interface with my PC and see what my dives look like graphically and keep a backup to my paper logbook.

Suunto provides a serial cable with a USB adapter and a software disk.

With USB out for so long now and serial fading away, why doesn't Suunto make available a direct USB cable? Anyway-- the software disk that came with the cable is useless because it has nowhere near the latest version of Dive Manager, so I download it from Suunto.com. Then I download the USB drivers for the dive computer.

Windows Vista has now been released but the installation instructions with the cable are not even current enough to mention XP (which is what I use.) Windows 2000 is as current as they get in the manual.

I've tried all sorts of orders of startup to try to get the software to see the Vyper, but all I get is "Device not Found".

I know the USB ports work -- I use them with the digital camera, Ipod, and other stuff. I even tried my Serial port. I know it works because I interface my old Garmin GPS with it.

I know others have surely had problems with this. Suggestions before I take this stuff back and get those spring fin straps I've been wanting instead?

TIA

Ahhh! I'm beginning to smell a rat! And see the light. Or maybe see a rat and smell the light!

After I posted, I checked the leisurepro website and was surprised to see the direct USB cable.

You see, I made my original purchase through my LDS and specified that the cable needed to be USB. They had to order it and it arrived in a couple of weeks. Before I drove down there I asked them to confirm that it was, indeed, USB. He said it was. I drove down and it was serial.

So another week went by and I drove down. Same cable--this time with USB adapter. I told them I was pretty sure I had seen a USB cable somewhere for this. He said he'd call SUUNTO and see. About a week later he reports that he talked to the SUUNTO folks and a serial cable with USB adapter was all that was available.

Closer inspection shows that the adapter seems to be a separate item -- not from SUUNTO.

I have a hard time arriving at any other conclusion than that the LDS lied to me. I get the impression that they are trying to pass off the serial cable that no one wants anymore.

Looks like I may be seeking my dive services elsewhere.

Thanks!

Hee hee hee!

Looks like someone's got some 'splainin' to do!:eyebrow:

Sory to have been the bearer of bad news, but...

Good luck, bor!
