Visiting NC

I have a very good friend who just moved to Hickory North Carolina. It's a college town for the most part I guess it's off 40 about 30 miles west of 77. I'll probably be staying with her a few weeks over the summer just to visit with friends and I was wondering if there was any diving around there. Any quarries or good lakes or anything. My friend said that the closest beach is 3.5 hours from there.

Let me know guys I'll be down a few times over the summer probably it would just be good to know.

Hi Austin,

We've got a few quarries to dive in and a couple are near Hickory. If I'm thinking correctly regarding Hickory's location. We've got Bluestone Quarry in Thomasville (I went diving there yesterday), Rolesville Quarry near Raleigh, Lake Norman Quarry near Charlotte, and a few smaller ones that I can't think of the names. Those three are the ones I usually hit in NC. There is also Lake Rawlings close to the NC/VA border. If you're here for the summer you definitely need to get in a coastal dive out of Morehead City or Wilmington. If you look at the sticky on the top of the NC forum here on Scubaboard there are a lot of links I've posted regarding quarries and charters.

Also, feel free to check out the NC Divers website (link in my signature line). We are always diving on the weekends so you won't have any problems finding any buddies for quarry diving or the coast.

We are going to be diving with Discovery out of Beaufort NC July 10-14. If we don't get blown out we should be diving some good stuff that you can handle on July 10. You can join us if you are in the area. We will be hitting the deeper more challenging stuff, weather permitting, later in the week.
