Rather than loads footage into Final Cut Pro and make it up as I go along, I want to make a small documentary with a bit of a narrative, information on depths, water temps etc.

Is there any cheap or free software can assist with logging shots and getting an edit script together. I could do it all in Word but just wondered what was out there these days?

celtx is "free." Which means you can get the basic script writing software at no charge. But, to use all the other features that can be provided (shot log, etc.) you have to pay. It is a one-stop shop if you want to pay. My personal preference is still Final Draft. It is expensive, but well worth every penny.
