This is a video from the post I had two weeks ago, I finally finished it.

Ghost Nets of Southern California on Vimeo

This was a trip done on 3-1-11 to help Ocean Defenders Alliance remove nets from the old marineland pier platform. It is an ongoing project and this only highlights one day that four of us from the Los Angeles Underwater Explorers club joined Kurt Lieber to help out the planet. Recently, fishing nets had been hooked on the platform and dragged it 100 yards until the fishing boat cut the net. This left the platform surrounded on three sites with net. Luckily it was so recently caught that it had not killed too much, but we were about a day or so late for a poor cormorant bird.

For more info, check out Kurt's site at oceandefenders.org.

Thanks for posting it, real informative.

Thanks to Karim and his team and all the other ODA volunteers for fighting this never ending battle. This is the second time Kurt has removed nets from the platform. I've placed surface buoys on it a few times, yet each time they get removed. If they coould remain in place perhaps the squid boats would realize there is an entanglement hazard below.
Here's Kurt's report;
