I am looking to find "the camera". My friend is on a hunt to get the best underwater high deffinition camera. I know they can range i price ect but I can not seem to find any onilne other than the snapper, which he already owns and is ready for bigger and better. I am only finding housings. Are there any other well known more upscale and advanced knock you socks off underwater HD camcorders out there? He is looking towards the professional side of things. Anyhelp is appreciated....THANKS:popcorn:

HD or HDV?

Anything at Sony Style can be housed. There's several con(pro)sumer based HDV/AVCHD models in all three formats. There's also a couple of new cameras from Canon and JVC that look interesting. Especially Canon's HF-100.

For "pro" cameras look at Sony Professional. A newer camera to be housed is the XDCAM EX - the PMW-EX1. Gates makes a housing and Amphibico Professional houses some of the other "pro" cameras.

A Red One in a Gates Housing. 4K Digital, Solid State storage. Digital is now film-like for a fraction of the cost. Camera starts at $17.5K - no idea on the housing. Although it may be the first housing that costs less than the camera...:rofl3:

There's a good article on Red in this month's Wired magazine.

For something more reasonable look at BHPHotovideo's Underwater Videography pages. $1500 to over $10K depending on camera, housing and ports chosen.
