I also keep very horizontal with my head in the same position on my ascent.

This was one of the keys for me. A good friend who is an instrument pilot told me that they are trained to avoid head motion as much as possible (especially rapid or gross movement) to avoid inciting vertigo. And I have discovered that the best way to start mine is to have to look around in midwater for my buddy. So my buddies are warned: Stay where I can see you, or you are on your own, because I CANNOT look for you!

As you can see, you are not alone. I experienced an aweful bout of vertigo on my very first discovery dive. Upon ascent, my left ear popped clear, but my right ear was having trouble. I had an immediate onset of vertigo and nausea. I thought I was going to toss my cookies right there in the pool! I felt sick for hours, and my right ear didn't clear for a day or two.

So, I went to see an ENT, who is also a diver. He made some suggestions and also put me on a daily nose spray to help keep things cleared up. Haven't had any problem since.

Good luck!!!
