veo250 serial # problem...

OK, I'm trying to register my new veo 250, and I've read the manual, but I can't get the serial #. I hit the center button, it starts it's diagnostic rundown, then I click and hold the side button. It just goes into surface mode. I've tried to click the side button BEFORE the countdown on the diagnostic reaches 0, I've clicked it AS the countdown reaches 0, and AFTER the countdown reaches 0. It always goes into surface mode no matter what I do. What am I doing wrong?

Also, if you have it in surface mode, is there no way to turn it off other than letting it sit for 2 hours? That's also been frustrating- I try to get the serial #, then I have to wait 2 hours to try it again.

Isn't the serial number anywhere on the case?

On my Atom there is a white sticker on the back that has the serial number and the manufacture date. My Datamask and PP2 have the serial numbers etched into the cases.

I don't know whether you've solved this problem or not, but: There's an error in the manual on this point. You need to hold down the front button, not the side button, while the computer is doing its diagnostic countdown. I had the same problem until, out of frustration, I tried it the other way.

There's no way to manually turn the computer off -- you need to let it time out. (You could always dig the battery out, I suppose...)

this does not surprise me one bit... I have found that thies manuals are really really hard to read with many such errors.
