VENICE — A diver died Saturday despite life-saving attempts by first responders and Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice.

According to a city news release, the Venice Marine Patrol received a call at about 9:43 a.m. from a diving charter captain that a diver, a 52-year-old man from Lutz, Florida, was in distress.

Master Police Officer Paul Joyce and Officer Josh Brooks responded to the location, about 2 miles west of the Venice Fishing Pier.

The diver had been found floating by the dive team and brought aboard one of the charter boats.

Brooks boarded the boat and began life-saving attempts, and the charter and VPD Marine Patrol returned to Higel Park Marina, where Venice Fire Rescue took over.

At that point, it appeared that life-saving measures were successful, the release stated, and the diver was rushed to SMH-Venice.

Hospital staff was unable to stabilize the diver, and he was pronounced dead after 45 minutes of CPR and other life-saving attempts.

His diving rig was placed into evidence for further inspection, but there's no indication his death was suspicious or malicious, the release stated, adding it may have been due to a medical emergency.
