Work started on the Vandenberg this past week. Some of the work being done includes pumping all her tanks down, dismantling the dishes, and removal of hazerdous meterials. Dry Docking is set for this comming week. stay tune for more updates and pics

Why do the dishes have to come off? Is it the potential for a falling object hazard?

They are being removed so the knuckles that turn the dishes can me removed as they are nothing but gears and motors that need to be taken off, also to meet our height requirements. The dishes will be refitted on the ship as soon as all the work on the deck is complete. A photo shop preview of the final profile of the ship will be coming soon.

    Kevin, great pictures...

Since your last post was 2 months ago... any updates?

BTW... might want to consider requesting a moderator to change the topic from "Ship Yard" to something like "Vandenberg Ship Yard progress thread" so that when people hit 'new posts' they see a descriptive title that depicts it's the Vandenberg. It'll bring more interest to the thread.

Ship to become Key West artificial reef | floridatoday.com | FLORIDA TODAY

After several delays, the Vandenberg ship has finally left for Key West, one of the last steps in a 13-year process to create the newest artificial reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

Officials say the 1,100-mile voyage should take about eight days. The vessel departed today.

Project organizers expect to sink the ship six miles south of the island sometime between May 20 and June 1.

Almost three quarters of the project’s $8.6 million price tag was used to rid the vessel of contaminants and prepare it for its new life as a marine habitat and attraction for divers.
