though I'm in the "hot air" capital, I do want to get to the west coast for diving. I'm fortunate to have family and friends on the coast, who have already said they'll put me up :)

I've heard great things about the diving (definately non-CAD)there.

Nanaimo offers you two great wrecks.......the "Saskatchewan" and the "Cape Breton."

Hi Arcticcat,

In Nanaimo, give Ocean Explorers a call. They take care of the wrecks mentioned above and have some other great sites ( like Dodd Narrows) nearby.

Roberta usually handles the email and bookings, Ian Hall is the owner.

See http://www.oceanexplorersdiving.com/ for more information.

There is also some spectacular diving further north ( Port Hardy, etc ).

Hey Articcat !

I'm in Victoria. Done all my diving around here with a couple of runs to Campbell River and an expedition to Port Hardy.

There's a spectrum of diving around Vancouver Island.

I'd suggest that you check out:

http://www3.telus.net/kerryw/

Which is a link to probably the best on line Vancouver Island dive guide available. Critter photos and dive site reviews.

I love Port Hardy (but's it's far away and expensive), Campbell River is a must see (recommend abyssal dive charters http://www.abyssal.com), and there's so much chioce (boat dives, wall dives, wreck dives, shore dives) around Victoria that you could spend a week here and not see it all.

Wetsuit diving is common, (I dove here for 3 yrs in a 7mm farmer john), but drysuits are the norm.

If you have any questions, drop me an email:

Hope this helps !!

Hola... I've been to Nanaimo, Campbel River, & Port Hardy with the Nautilus Explorer. I can't say enough good things about Mike's operation. On the mainland side I just came back from a weekend at Porpoise Bay Charters on the Sechelt Inlet & we had a great time. Awesome diving all 'round!

Just repeating what’s been said
Anywhere between Nanaimo and port hardy is great diving there is lots of stuff on the web about it.

You have about eight artificial wrecks along the coast
The Cape Breton being the newest one a 400 + ft navy support ship and right next to it the Saskatchewan a 300 ft battleship.
They make for a great first and second dive.

There are also several really good wrecks along the coast
The Diamond Knot, Capilano, Gulf Stream to name some of the better known ones. And there are some good deep wrecks between Puget Sound and Nanaimo

The walls are spectacular deep and shallow, anywhere with a strong tidal exchange [current] is going to be prolific.

There is more marine life in Port Hardy than Cayman Brac, or Cozumel.

Sharks in the summer for Six Gill sharks 15 ft sharks that have no interest in you so close ups are common.

There are a lot of mom and pop type of dive charter operators and dive resort people around here, I would recommend one of them since they are the bread and butter of diving in Nanaimo or Port Hardy.

It sounds like scubakat sets up trips up here you should chat her up, I am

If you are into technical diving, then I set up expeditions to some remote, deep, fun wrecks in the area. We could talk
