The issue I've had with 300s is that the threads vs the face can get a little out of alignment. Regs and/or gas flow meters don't seal as well then.

I have read this as well. I wonder if some of that can be solved by using a SS plug for sealing the valve thus protecting the threads when not in use (and from losing gas)?
 
I don't have any plugs. The only issue I had was in a now defunct dive shop. Their analyzer flow meter never seated quite right in my 300 bar manifold (a dive rite), like never been used before.

I have never had an issue with my regs in that very same manifold.

If you're blowing O2 sensors apart you need a flow meter :) The LP hose ones works great.
