I'm starting to try to brainstorm ideas for a week-long trip for the first week of November, but I'm not sure where we should go!

Last year in November we went to Roatan for a pure diving vacation at the Fantasy Island Resort and it was great.

We probably want to go somewhere in Central or South America or in the Caribbean. We just got back from Thailand, so nothing too extravagant for this trip.

Any suggestions? It doesn't have to be a 100% diving location, we like outdoorsy activities, water sports, and sight-seeing too, so places with good non-diving activities work also!

Belize or Costa Rica sound like good ideas for you. Or even maybe Kona, Hawaii. All 3 have lots of topside activities, hiking, jungle tours in Belize and CR - Kona has jungles and volcanos to visit. Belize has Mayan ruins, Costa Rica has an active volcano.

I agree on Belize and kona. Kona is a bit more of a trip from the east coast, but, I enjoy the diving there better than Belize. however, the topside inland stuff in Belize was pretty amazing. Although so is kona.
 
Bonaire or Curcao? No sure how much other stuff you are looking for from what I understand Curcao has more topside stuff.
 
Costa Rica has so much top side stuff that you would like to come back again!
We have so many divers that tell me next year they will plan a longer trip for canopy, volcano, rafting, jungle, ect ect. and the diving is great!
 
Costa Rica is what I had been thinking of before I posted this. I had been reading other posts and it seemed like Playas Del Coco was a good place to go. I wasn't sure if its too hard to get there from San Juan though. Is it easy to get a quick flight? I wasn't sure where to look for local flights like that. But it seems like that is an area that would work really well for us otherwise. Or is there somewhere else in Costa Rica that's easier to get to and also has lots of activities?

I'll have to do some research on Belize, Bonaire, and Curacao. Those seem like good options too. I think Kona is a little far for this trip, but I'll remember that one for next time!

Are there any specific resorts or areas that anyone would suggest for these places?

Please feel free to email me with any questions on Bonaire. I am originally from NJ also, but now live on Bonaire! I can basically answer ANY question you may have. Continental flies direct out of Newark, and if you live in S. Jersey, I have quite a few ways to get to Bonaire from AC Airport and Philly pretty cheap.

San Andres Island and/or Old Providence Island, depending on what you like in a diving destnation, are two destination mostly overlooked with great reviews from those who do ventuve. San Andres is more tourisy with resorts and nightlife and Old Providence is laid back and geared toard eco toursim and nature.
 
You can fly in to San Jose and there is a direct 5 hour bus ride to Coco or fly into Liberia and take a 20 minute taxi ride. I used to live on Curacao, total different diving then here. Top siode not much to do besides a happy hour almost every night. The beach life is better there than here, so it all depends on what you like. Bonmaire is a real divers islands but same as Curacao not too much top side activity. Diving on the islands is clear and small creatures compared to here being a little murky with the big creatures.

any of the mainland dive resorts in Belize also arrange a wide array of topside acticvities. The tourism trade there is very organized. We stayed at hamanasi in Placencia. it was very nice. The diving was good, not great. The best diving was off of Turneffe. The reef was very pristine there.
However, the topside activities in Belize were beyond compare. Especially for the adventurous. The caves tours especially.
While the best diving is off the outer cayes, the mainland in the south offers good diving mixed with too many topside activities to do in a week.
I will say, though, that I spent a month in Costa rica. While i didn't do any diving, i would go back there over any choice in central america.
