When shooting underwater, is it better to remove the UV filter? I haven't in the past but wondered if I would get better pics.

Most, if not all, digital cameras filter UV at the sensor. A UV filter on the lens is not needed.

I use the UV just to protect the lens from contact. Didn't know if it affected the light or not.

UV filters are no longer recommended for those who shoot above water digital photography. UV filters are still used to protect lenses from damage and contamination, as are plain glass filters. There is the argument that any filter mounted on a lens will degrade the image quality, usually because of added reflections or loss of resolution. Such problems are due to cheap, substandard filters.
