We came back a week and a half ago and can tell you just about everything you want to know about this awesome little island. We rented a house right on the water, and were able to watch Alton's fabulous crew get ready every morning and every afternoon to head out. We had some really awesome dives and our DM (Dione) was the best. He was there for us as we needed and when we didn't think we needed him and would turn around.... there he was! Unfortunately he is leaving there at the end of the month and I just hope that a fraction of what he brought to Alton's stays behind, not that they need it but he was truly an asset, and wish him well. Think he said Canada might be in the "cross hairs", what a change.
The staff at Alton's: Julie was awesome, we had ZERO issues, and wish other dive shops should spend a day and see how the real professionals do it. They just didn't go where "they" wanted to go, they asked what you liked, how long you would be diving for and made sure that EVERYONE on the boat got what they were looking for. Dive briefing were to the "T"! If I had only one request, it would be to have pineapple on the boat every day instead of some of the other fruits (which were good as well). You will NEVER taste a sweeter pineapple than what they had. Oh, when you get off the boat after your morning dives.....hang out for a couple of minutes and enjoy the fresh homemade lunch they have. We had our best lunches during our stay right there on the dock. I will say; be prepared....it might cost you 5 or 6 US dollars for lunch and a drink. Yep you heard me 5 or 6 dollars, and that will include a piece of homemade cake or brownie from the "cake lady". The prices are insane.
We stayed at the Boat House, which we booked through Destination Utila (Vicki). She and her husband couldn't do enough for us, and delivered on everything we were told. When we return, AND WE WILL!, we hope to go with more people and will rent another property from her as well.
Lastly....BUGS! Not one until the last day and a half, but with a couple of swats with your hand, and they too were history. We were told they are seasonal, and wind has a lot to do with it, so that being said I guess we were good. Really no different than most other islands.
Feel free to send me PM with any questions.
Alton's & Destination Utila get five stars!
