Using Direct Messages

The names have changed over the years but the function is basically the same.

Private Message (or PM) :rtarrow: Conversation :rtarrow: Direct Messages (DM)

Direct Message is ScubaBoard's internal private email system between members. You can access it by clicking on the envelope icon. There will be a red box with a number showing how many unread Direct Messages you have.

Clicking on the envelope icon will pop this drop-down menu. Recent DMs are listed along with the two options at the bottom.

This page is typical of the "Show all" list of your DMs.

You can use the other option in this dropdown menu to start a new DM.

Another option to start a DM with another member is to click or mouseover their Avatar and click the Start Direct Message button.

More than one member can be included in your list of Recipients. This is an example of adding another Recipient.

Note the auto-complete feature helps ensure against typos and the avatar helps pick the member visually.

Enter your message in the editor box like a normal post. Review the two options at the bottom and click on your choices before clicking the Save (send) button.

Quote a Post in a Direct Message

You can click Quote in DM at the bottom-left of each post. That will quote the entire post in a DM to the member who wrote the post. It is a very convenient way to discuss comments privately.

Starred Direct Messages

You have the option to "Star" the message, which can help you locate more important messages that you want to revisit later.

Why can't I send or even see the direct message button?
I believe you need at least 25 posts, and your above post was #25. Can you see the DM button now?

Wow, yes I can
Thank you! very helpful
I have done direct messages before...not much but I did send a few a year or so ago
Maybe it's that you have to have x amount each year?
Either way, I can now contact a scubaboard member from a recent dive trip to Belize and get him a thread to a great video of him and a Reef Shark. This shark was right on top of him maybe 1 foot away, probably 9 feet long... maybe 10

"Interesting" rule, but a handicap for some who read lots, post little and don't want to bother the whole community with a post that would be of interest to only one member.
I guess it's to prevent spamming accounts?

Yes a handicap. Sort of when you login to your bank account and you have to wait for that pesky text or email verification.

The alternative is to give all your money away to those who don't believe in earning an honest living. Or at the very least, having to scroll past spam threads or getting slews of private messages from scammers on social media or internet discussion forums.
Well there is a difference. With 2 factor authentification I can use my online banking from the 1st day I get the account/ service set up.
I am on a few other forums and I haven't heard/ seen of private messages being spammed being a problem. Maybe because these boards are Asia based? (throwing out hypothesis). Or maybe because I am not the type to fall prey to these scams? Who knows.
Don't think I am really arguing against you BTW, just getting my post count up mostly! hehehe!!

Exactly so. Sad that such measures are needed, but the world is what it is these days.
I guess it's the lesser of 2 evils! :)
