Good day everyone,
I am a video director for my local church in Montana, and my pastor is wanting to do a video underwater. He will be at around 3.5 feet deep, and he wants to use a "Spare Air" or similar device to take some breaths so that he can deliver his message from underwater without the need to stand up and take a real breath. I should say that the total underwater time will be around one to two minutes, with him taking a breath only as needed.

I was wondering if there are any dangers in us doing this, as he is not scuba certified. I have read of some dangers at 5-6 feet deep, but I needed to know more information as to the dangers we may face. The last thing I want to do is record my pastor's lungs collapsing or exploding on video.

This may be a stupid question, or it may be a question that could make a huge difference... Just want to be as safe as possible, so please don't grill me for asking this :)

If this sounds too dangerous, then do you have any suggestions as to how this could be accomplished? Maybe a SNUBA system or something similar?

Thanks so much!

Yes, he can easily injure or kill himself breathing any sort of compressed air underwater, including a spare air in a few feet.

He needs a little SCUBA training to do this safely.

Not sure how this will work, but talking underwater will use up air much more quickly and be mostly unintelligible.

flots.

Find a scuba instructor in your area. Offer the scuba instructor a hundred bucks to make this happen safely. The instructor will spend a couple of hours training your pastor and go in the water with him. Like the pastor has hired a professional videographer, now it's time for him to hire a dive instructor. The dive instructor will answer all of your questions.

+1

The problem with what you want to do is that the largest swing in pressure is in the first few feet.
If the pastor takes a deep breath and rapidly get to the surface from even less than 3 feet there is a potential of lung injury, so my suggestion is to take Wookies advice on this.

Agreed, and he may let you use his reg set included in his fee - which would still save you money over a spare air...

You guys are awesome! Thanks so much for possibly saving his life... I've learned that we have a SCUBA instructor in our church, and I'll be giving them a call today to set something up. Seriously, we were going to do this on Tues, you guys rule!

As far as the words being spoken, we WANT the blurble blurble sounds as we are planning on using subtitles for his message.

Again, thanks!

I hope this is not a sermon about complex theological issues like transubstantiation vs. consubstantiation or 'what the heck was Jesus thinking when he said it would be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter Heaven?' Everything will sound like 'garubblegabub'. That may be adequate, though. How much underwater speaking experience has this man had? Will the congregation also be submerged? Is he doing this voluntarily?

He just needs a really long snorkel! :D

Glad a congregation member will help.

I dont suggest trying this at home, but well, I was young(er) and stupid(er) once and we actually used a 6 ft piece of garden hose.
Not safe either from air quality (6 feet of hose takes a bit to vent out) nor expansion reasons, but we had fun.
We actually also used a small air tank from a airtool compressor too btw, even less safe for even more reasons..
Yes, I know better these days, no thanks to what I did back then :p

From another angle, what message does he think he can deliver from under water? Talking underwater produces bubbles and lip movement but no useful voice. While such a shallow depth may not be a problem in terms of overpressure injury, there is still the problem of learning how to use whatever equipment is chosen. If you just stick a regulator (or spare air) in your mouth and inhale, water is the first thing delivered to the lungs.
