I saw used rental BCDs for sale at a dive store today. The price was around $150. Is this a good buy ? I'm just thinking that with no way to know if the BCD is in tip-top shape or not it might be a risky thing. How long do BCDs last anyway ? 5 years ? 10 years ?

These were Oceanic BCDs with weight release system. The condition is, ahem, 'rental'. They look used. The plastic and rubber seem to be ok. I was not planning to buy a BCD anytime soon, but if the price is right, I might. Any advice ?

Thanks,
Zsolt

Used rental BCs often available on ebay for under $50.00. These are entry level jacket style BCs without weight integration. At $150.00, I would guess that the LDS is looking to fully recover his wholesale investment.

:1poke: Zsolt...Check out some of the online stores. www.divebooty.com and compare prices. There are brand new, under warrenty BC's for $150.00. In fact, I have a Mares Resort Origin which I used 10 times and then upgraded. Its in absolutely perfect shape, less than a year old. Check it out on one of the online stores. Send me a message before it goes to ebay....It can be yours for 50 bucks!

$150 for a BC that is used enough to look used doesn't sound like a good deal when you can get a new BC fairly inexpensively, or a pretty good used even cheaper if you look around.

Hi Divedoggie,

Like I said I was not planning on buying a BCD just yet, but let me ask you the size of the Resort Origin you have.

Oh, and may I ask why you upgraded ?

Thanks,
Zsolt

I paid $250 for a used Range BCD with intergrated Octo/Inflator (MK-II).

It was NOT a rental, and maybe had 20 dives on it and was 3 years old.

As the Ranger runs around $400 new (internet price) and the Octo runs about $120 new (internet) that should give you some idea.

Find the BC new on LP, and get a price if possible (or a later similar model). If it's in like new condition, I think that 75% of retail for used is a starting point. Go down from there.

I'm guessing that the LDS paid about what they are selling it for.. kinda lame considering they depreciate and rent these things even if most of the use is for instruction where the BCD is part of the gig.

You can also check on EBay.

Thanks for all your advice. It did seem to me that $150 was a bit much for those BCDs. I don't think I will do any diving here in California until the spring, but I will think over Divedoggie's offer.

Did you sell your bc ? If not what size is it? I would be willing to drop you 50 for it
