I don't plan on getting into hardcore underwater photography but I decided to pick up the Canon WP-DC9 waterproof case for my SD800IS so I can snap a few underwater photos of my adventures.

The unit comes with a diffuser and I'm wondering whether people here often use the diffuser or do they not use the diffuser. The diffuser is rather cumbersome as it just dangles on a lanyard unless it is permanently mounted (or completely removed).

My wife has the SD850is with the WP-DC15.
Very similar case setup.

Put the camera in the housing and take a few shots with flash in a
dimly lit room against a white wall.

Compare shots with diffuser vs without.
You should see an obvious difference.

Without the diffuser, you will get a big shadow from the snout of the housing
blocking the light. With the diffuser the shadow is usually removed except for
extremely close up shots.
The diffuser effectively moves the source of the light to the front of the snout.

She attaches the diffuser and leaves it attached all the time.
To me, it doesn't seem to be an issue to just leave it attached to the camera
and it makes a big difference in the flash illumination pattern.

But try taking a few shots and see for yourself.

I have a G7 with WP-DC11 and the diffuser is imparative when using the flash for the above mentioned reasons..

Just put it on permanently, below around 1 meter you will get the shadow.

2nd benefit of the diffusor is that the flash is less hard, showing less sharp shadows and less backscatter.
