urgent question relating to my trusty 5050 and strobe

Yes, I'm still shooting with my 5050! Its been a year since I last took it underwater and I'm confused. The various MyMode ssettings I used last year all have the flash set at slave, but my strobe won't fire. On the other hand if I set the camera on Program, with the flash set at auto, the strobe fires.

Suggestions on what I should/shouldn't be doing?
 
Check your Mymode settings. If the batteries in the camera were allowed discharge (or there were none in it) the camera may have reset your choices to the factory defaults....and do you know about the internal memory capacitor that goes bad on 5050s??
 
Took the camera on two dives. Tried various settings. Sometimes the strobe fired. Sometimes it didn't. Even more confusing, there are times when it definitely fired when the photos still turned out almost totally dark.

Other oddity: one of my mymode settings defaults to the XD card. The others default to the CF card. The XD card shots almost always came out better.
 
What strobe are you using? Is it hard wired or fiber optic? I use a 5050 with an Inon D2000 strobe with a fiber optic cable. In the camera mode menu I set the camera mode (center button on rear of camera) for the camera flash to int + and slow 1. I shoot in manual mode. The flash setting on the left side button is set to slow flash.
 
maybe you should go into settings, see what each of the mymodes are set to, then reset the mymodes and program them from scratch. It doesn't make sense that it would come out better on the xD card just purely with the difference being the storage device. there must be some other weird settings you missed.

Oddly, on my last trip, I couldn't set WB while underwater in mymode. I was going nuts thinking I must have forgotten how to do it. I could custom set WB to a new slot and change mymode to use that custom WB slot. But I only had 4 and 1,2 and 3 were all occupied. I found some other weird way to custom set WB. Maybe these cameras needs a master reset?
