I have seen both reef in bad/declining shape and reef recover in recent years. Reef recover in areas people realize and made a conscious effort to protect and improve the environment (personally and local laws), besides the resilient ability of mother nature.
There has been people posting the comment too many divers are bad for the reef; I found the contrary to be true. I now make environment awareness a repeated emphasis to all my OW students, and had been comforting to see most turned into avid environment protectors preaching to fellow divers and non-divers alike. I strongly believe properly educating more people to dive is a positive impact.
Hopefully these effort will spread to larger population and start to make an effort to make change on bigger issues like plastic garbage and global warming. As one posted previous described, I am cautiously optimistic. I have to be, all my children are divers.
