A diver dies at sea off the coast of Celestun

written by Yucatan Times October 8, 2025 0 comment

A 24-year-old man, identified as José A. Mendoza, tragically lost his life shortly after diving several miles off the coast of Celestún.

The victim was part of the crew of the vessel “Simio” and was diving and fishing on Sunday, October 5th, about 75 miles (about 120 kilometers) from the port, when, upon exiting the water, he began to experience health complications.

According to his companions’ testimony, he began to experience severe chest pains and difficulty breathing.

His companions then decided to make an emergency return to the safe harbor.

However, during the journey, the young man lost consciousness, and upon reaching land, authorities confirmed his death.
