Hello all. I am going on my check out dive this weekend :) I have some questions about the underwater writing slates.

Do you use one?
How well do they work?
How do you erase it?

Yes
Depends upon one's ability to read and write
With toothpaste rubbed around the surface and rinsed off with water

Do you use one? Yes, i have one that clips to my BCD, but I tuck it in so it doesn't dangle.
How well do they work? It works well, but carry a small pencil sharpener, have a knife to sharpen the pencil with, or bring xtra pencils with you, cause inevitably, the lead will break.
How do you erase it? I pack a small tube of toothpaste, a little dab and some elbow grease during the surface interval and it comes right off.

Don't clip it to some ring somewhere and let it dangle. Get one that fits in a pocket.

They're a PITA.

Time spent working out some additional hand signals with your buddy will be time well spent.

Still, for some things, slates are necessary. Pop-point pencils work well when your wooden pencil dissolves. Some use disposable mechanical pencils - they go south quick in ocean, last a bit longer in fresh water. Wet-notes work well.

The less you have to use them, the happier you'll be.

To get stubborn marks off (all your gear, not just slates), use 'bartenders friend' and a green scrubbie.

You say that like you have some experience...

I use a Dive Rite wrist slate (the larger one that has been discontinued); goes on my left arm with my compass—made my life easier on many occasions when diving with strangers! Sometimes (when not carrying a camera) I make rough drawings on the slate of fish and other creatures so that I can ID them later. To erase what I wrote/drew, I just rub the surface with my fingers.

Some divers/agencies prefer wet notes.

I use a wrist slate for dive plan (puts it up there by my computer so when I check my depth etc my plan is right there to look at as well)

And wet notes for communication, I use a brillo pad to clean my slate, and the wet notes, just flip to a new page.

avpoh8 (or anybody), try the wrist ones on before you buy. i hoped the wetsuit would make up the slack, but it didn't. useless to have if you can't get it to hold still so you can write on it. watches, slates, etc are made for beefy guys, not delicate-wristed girls. (no comments from the peanut gallery.) and doc, what if you don't have pockets? how should it be stowed?
