The current issue of SCUBA Diving magazine has a short feature on someone who is riding a mountain bike on the ocean floor. Fortunately he is only riding it on sandy bottoms where there is "no risk" of danger to marine life (my quotes).

For all the instruction we do about dangling consoles and octopuses, is this really an appropriate underwater activity? I don't think so.

At least he is not riding the coral reefs on his bike, but sandy bottoms are full of critters. Admittedly they tend to be more immune to disturbance, but still...

Sounds like fun.

Uh, why not use a scooter??

gotta agree drbill.....it seemed to me even if the article SAID he was only on sandy bottoms....he wasnt...and the potential to damage reefs were great. just another hot dog looking for his 15 mins of fame.

Your right, Bill but look at the photos of all the scuba rags. They are full of dangles from octos to consoles. On the cover or in the articles of just about every mag I have seen recently there is something dangling. While the industry is teaching that the standard is no dangles the mags are teaching something different. I know this does not fit the thread but it is stuck in my craw for a while now. It just seems that the mags do not care what they are teaching the average diver.

Yeah it doesn't seem too safe, but it is fun. I found a relatively new dirt bike at Big Blue Quarry in VT a few years back... we attached a lift bag and brought it to the surface, then attached some weight belts and rode it back down to the bottom. I really wish we had a video camera...
