Underwater metal detectors in Mexico

My brother and I do a lot of diving in Cozumel and I have asked several people about taking an Underwater metal detector down there on our next trip to use on the windward side. Some people have said it is o.k. to do so and some say it will be up to the people working customs that day at the airport (whether or not they want one). Does anyone know the legal answer as to bringing a metal detector into Mexico, and leaving with it also? Thanks, Jim

I'd be more concerned about the legality of what you find. they are protective of their antiquities. Also I think part of cozumel is a marine sanctuary, so may want to check into that too.

May want to look into shipping it to your hotel.
