I had heard that there is an underwater radio beacon-type gadget to help you find your way back to the anchor. Anyone have any experience with these or know where to look?

I've used the EyeSea Sonar system. It has a transmitter that you hang off the boat to about 15 fsw and then you wear a receiver which tells you the direction and the distance to the boat. It works quite well though you sometimes lose the signal for a short period of time. While it's a neat gadget -- with a little compass work and some natural navigation, I haven't found it very useful. However, I usually dive the clear and warm waters of south Florida and the Carribean.

I would recommend new divers spend their money on a navigation course and save the hundreds of dollars!

I reccomend you pay with cash for these type of devices.

The FBI issued supenas to the manufacturers and
some dive shops trying to find out who purchased these.
They were worried that it would be somehow attached
to an underwater "target" and then used by terrorists
that want to use it to find their way underwater and
then blow something up.

Remember when the FBI was getting PADI's and others
member lists looking for people who started dive training
but didn't finish it? well this is an off shoot of that.

Where are you getting the info about subpoenas on equipment purchases?

Frankly, paying cash for an item like this is more likely to raise warning flags than simply buying it using a credit card.

The FBI Supoenas were in the news (CNN, etc) that they were
getting information from PADI and other certifying agencies.

I asked some of the Local Dive shops if the FBI had been in
and they said yes and had a supeona for information on stuff
including "underwater location finders".

and yes you're correct that a cash sale would prob raise
such warning flags also.

I remember after Sept. 11, 2001 my dive shop handed over all their training files after is was requested by the FBI via supeona.

I never heard anything about the FBI (or other agencies) trying to track particular scuba related purchases; however, I wouldn't doubt it.

Back to the thread topic of underwater locators:

I think they have some uses in diving, but they would also potentially "dumb" down navigation and could lead to more problems if/when the locator fails.
