Is there a underwater GPS system that divers can bring with them on dives.

It would be nice to locate a spot where one sees something interesting.

Not that I know of.
GPS will not work under water, just like it does not work in doors.
There are various ultasonic locating devices but I have never used any.
If I find an interesting spot like a nice big hole full of crays I have a SMB with a .5 kg weight on the end of a spool that I deploy to mark the spot and then GPS the spot later from the boat.

Hmmm... I have heard there isn't but then someone corrected me...

Seen a link to a product that trailed a surface Antena. The case was depth limited to 100ft max. Sorry don't have the link anymore.

The signals don't transmit underwater... Sort of like when you have your cell phone in your drysuit undies. No matter how many times you get your friends to call your phone won't ring ...or so I hear, yeah heard...

We just did this a couple of days ago. The answer is no but there is a unit that sends an antenna up. Military kinda stuff.

bummer... would be nice to mark off a home of pigmy seahorses for future dives.

I've used GPS/GIS for 15 years to study kelp forests. We tried mapping our dive park with a trailing surface antenna, but it added too much additional positional error due to currents (not to mention the kelp canopy!). It would be interesting to see how the unit suggested functions.

The military has them. They actually map out the underwater landscape too. But, too costly for recreational divers.

they have another name for it though. Its like oceanic imagery plus gps and other functions rolled into one. the SDV's have them too
